¿What is Piracetam?

This belongs to the group of medicines known as GABA analogues. Piracetam acts on the central nervous system. It is thought to protect the cerebral cortex in the brain against a deficiency of oxygen. The cerebral cortex is responsible for consciousness and for voluntary activity and plays a role in perception, memory, and mental ability. Piracetam is used alongside other medicines in the treatment of cortical myoclonus. This condition results in short involuntary movements or jerks due to stimuli from the central nervous system. This can also result in difficulty with speech, loss of hand function and an inability to walk. Piracetam has also been used following trauma or surgery, and in a variety of other disorders such as alcoholism, vertigo, senile dementia, stroke, and behavioural disorders in children. Piracetam is available in tablet and oral liquid form.

¿What is the most important information I should know about Piracetam?

Before taking any of this medicine make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:
* if you are pregnant, trying for a baby, or breast-feeding
* if you suffer from liver or kidney problems
* if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine
* if you are taking any other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal and complementary medicines

¿What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Piracetam?

Do not take this solution if you have ever had a serious liver or kidney condition, you have ever experienced a brain haemorrhage, you are allergic to any of the ingredients, or if you are under 16 years of age. As there is little information on the effects of piracetam during pregnancy it is recommended that anywoman who is taking this medicine should take precautions to avoid becoming pregnant by using a recognised contraceptive device or method. If you plan to become pregnant, or if you could be pregnant, you must consult your doctor immediately. Piracetam can cross into breast milk so ask your doctor’s advice before starting to breast feed. If your doctor has ever told you that you have a kidney or bleeding problem you should not take this medicine before asking their advice as it may be necessary to start you on a lower dose. As kidney problems occur more frequently with increasing age it may also be necessary for the doctor to reduce your dose if you are elderly.

¿How should I take Piracetam?

You must take your medicine exactly as directed by your doctor and carefully read the instructions on the label. The normal starting dose is equivalent to 21 ml of the solution (one teaspoon is approximately 5 ml). It is best to split the dose so that the solution is taken on two or three separate occasions during the day (morning,midday and again in the evening). When you start taking this medicine your doctor may ask you to gradually increase the dose to ensure that you receive the best dose to treat your condition, follow their instructions carefully. As the active ingredient has a very bitter taste you should swallow the undiluted solution followed by a glass of water or a soft drink.

¿What happens if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take this medicine at the normal time take the dose as soon as possible then take your next dose at your usual time.

¿What happens if I overdose?

Piracetam is non-toxic even in high doses. Massive accidental overdose can be treated either orally or intravenously with forced diuresis or dialysis in the case of renal insufficiency. In the event of overdose or accidental swallowing, consult a doctor. If you accidentally take more than the recommended dose contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

¿What should I avoid while taking Piracetam?

Piracetam has been used with varying effect in the following conditions and could influence them favourably, although no convincing proof of efficacy has been submitted.
* Involutional syndromes related to ageing.
* Chronic alcoholism. Piracetam side effects Piracetam has been found to have very few side effects, and those it has are typically "few, mild, and transient." A large-scale, 12-week trial of high-dose piracetam found no adverse effects occurred in the group taking piracetam as compared to the placebo group. Many other studies have likewise found piracetam to be well-tolerated. Symptoms of general excitability, including anxiety, insomnia, irritability, headache, agitation, nervousness, and tremor - are occasionally reported. Such symptoms seem more likely reported in connection with caffeine consumption (coffee), or with monosodium glutamate (a common additive in many processed foods). Effects can be reduced with magnesium supplements. Headache from use of piracetam may be alleviated by coadministration of an acetylcholine biosynthetic precursor, or a drug with cholinergic effects, such as choline bitartrate, choline citrate, lecithin, cyprodenate or centrophenoxine.

¿What other drugs will affect Piracetam?

A single case has been reported in which the concomitant use of Piracetam and thyroid hormone extracts (T3 + T4) has produced confusion, irritability and sleeping disorders. Its interaction with other drugs has not been described.
